The fully financed Jefferson Scholars Foundation National Fellowship 2024–2025 is available to foreign students pursuing a PhD. In addition to an office, stack access, interlibrary loan rights, internet access, a chance to present a paper in Hagley’s seminar series, and use of Hagley’s reduced scholar’s lodgings, this fellowship will give $25,000 in benefits.
Like other National Fellows, the Business and Politics Fellow is matched with an accomplished researcher in their area who will act as a mentor and vital source of advice for the duration of the fellowship. In addition, the Fellow attends sessions in the autumn and spring where they get guidance for reaching a larger audience.

Eligibility Criteria for Jefferson Scholars Foundation National Fellowship
In order to qualify for the Jefferson Scholars Foundation National Fellowship, candidates need to fulfill the necessary requirements:
- Languages Needed: English
- All nations throughout the world are eligible.
- A Ph.D. candidate must apply, with the expectation that they will finish their dissertation by the end of the Fellowship year. A post-doctoral scholarship is not what this is. Non-citizens of the United States may apply.
- Every Fellow must attend two conferences: one in the spring and one in the autumn. The Jefferson Scholars Foundation and the University of Virginia’s academic community can hear research and conclusions presented at these conferences.
- Getting input from mentors who are also present is especially possible at the spring conference.
- Both conferences had their expenses covered by the Jefferson Scholars Foundation.
- With the exception of the Jefferson Scholars/Hagley Library Dissertation Fellowship, which necessitates residency at the Hagley Library during the academic year, residence at the Jefferson Scholars Foundation is recommended but not necessary for other Fellows.
- In place of paying for their travel and accommodations for the spring and autumn conferences, Fellows who opt to live in residence will get an extra stipend of $1,500, with the exception of the Jefferson Scholars/Hagley Library Fellow.
- It is required of all Fellows—regardless of residency—to engage with and support the Jefferson Scholars Foundation’s multidisciplinary community.
How to Apply for the Jefferson Scholars Foundation National Fellowship?

- Sheet of application information
- The 1,200 word project description should include a synopsis of your dissertation or book, the thesis, an explanation of how it advances or updates previous research, and the rationale behind your choice of topic.
- 750-word blog post or opinion piece – a published or sample blog post (like those on Slate.com) or op-ed (like those in the New York Times) that connects a key finding from your study to a current issue in public policy.
- Reference list (3 pages)
- Two-page curriculum vitae
- Example of writing (limit 40 pages) The chosen sample should be either a journal article that has been approved and published OR one chapter from your dissertation with a one-page introduction placing the chapter in the larger project.
- TWO recommendation letters, at least one of which must to come from your adviser. Recommendation letters can be started via the application procedure or sent directly to the Selection Board at nationalfellows@jeffersonscholars.org.
